A new study led by researchers from the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has revealed that chickpea yields in Ethiopia could be potentially doubled by enhancing the technical efficiency of its production and technology use.

The study, published in Springer Nature’s Food Security journal, was conducted in three regions of Ethiopia – Amhara, Oromia and Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region (SNNP) – which are among the major chickpea-growing areas in the country.

New study unravels the mechanisms through which the icipe push-pull technology conquers the fall armyworm, currently one of the most devastating and difficult pests in Africa

In 2016, the fall armyworm, a destructive moth that causes devastating damage to over 100 plant species, including cereals and horticultural crops, was reported for the first time in Africa. Initially confirmed in Nigeria, the pest has spread rapidly, rampaging its way across the continent, defying most control attempts, leaving farmers, governments and other stakeholders helpless. So intense and relentless is the pest’s damage that some countries, like Rwanda, incorporated defence forces into its management. By 2020, the fall armyworm had caused an average annual loss of 36 percent in maize production alone; and a total economic loss of USD 200 million, in Africa.

Every decade from now until 2050, the growing population will result in a 14% increase in global food demand, while the world’s current agricultural practices will reduce productivity by 2%. Without significant changes to the structure of food production and consumption, we won’t be able to grow enough to feed ourselves. Not to mention the adverse effects on wild plant and animal species and the impact on climate change that comes from these same ill-advised practices.

To reverse the cycle, agricultural workers must practice ways to introduce more biodiversity. With a few innovative changes, the same amount of land can produce an even better yield in the long term, requiring less deforestation and extensification.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has driven up already high global agricultural commodity prices.

According to the World Food Programme (WFP) fertiliser prices have also reached all-time highs both in the global and domestic markets, casting a serious shadow on 2022 cereal harvests and food insecurity in the Eastern Africa Region.

“Fertilisers prices increased two-fold (more than doubled) from their levels a year ago in the region within two months of the Ukraine Invasion. This unfortunately coincided with the 2022 main season crop planting that disrupted farming,” it said.

The Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Agency (ATA) which has been renamed as Agricultural Transformation Institute (ATI) announced that it is working on boosting production and productivity so as to ensure food security since its establishment 2010.

Delivering Opening remark at the ATI launching event, Agriculture Minister Oumer Hussein said that the event is timely as Ethiopia is implementing a significant structural reform and the 2030 Development Plan. According to him, for the past years the institute has achieved many successes especially in boosting production and productivity which is a one the core objective of the institute.
