As engineer, we have heard the terms "one way slab" and "two way slab". The major difference between them is the placement of steel and encountered bending forces. In one way slab, main reinforcement is provided on one side only because bending moment occurs on one direction only i.e., shorter direction, whereas in two way slab main reinforcement is provided in both sides because moment is generated on both sides. Apart from that, if Longer to shorter side value is greater than 2, it will be one way slab. If value is less than 2 it will be two way slab.
In two way slab, main bars are cranked which are also called as cranked bars. These bars are cranked at an angle of 45 degrees. And these are placed alternatively in the slab. Moreover, to counter the shear forces at corners or supports, extra bars are provided.
