At the battle of Adwa Ethiopian warriors skilled in sword fighting called Shotel destroyed the invading Italian soldiers in hand to hand combat . The Battle of Adwa was the climactic battle of the First Italo - Ethiopian War . The Ethiopian forces defeated the Italian invading force on Sunday 1 March 1896 , near the town of Adwa . The decisive victory thwarted the campaign of the Kingdom of Italy to expand its colonial empire in the Horn of Africa . The Ethiopians surrounded the Italians for two weeks and , upon Empress Tayitu's advice , cut off the fort's water supply . The Italian commander agreed to surrender if they would be allowed to leave with their firearms . Menelik agreed that they could leave the garrison .

  2 "የሰለሞናዊው" ስርወ መንግስት የተመሰረተው በየኩኖ አምላክ ሲሆን ስያሜውም ያገኘው ገዥዎቹ ከሰሎሞን እና ከንግሥተ ሳባ ዘር ናቸው ተብሎ ስለሚታሰብ ነው።  ይህንን አዲስ ሥርወ መንግሥት ከቀድሞው የዛግዌ ሥርወ መንግሥት ለመለያየት ሕገወጥ ነው ተብሎ ከታላቅ ሥልጣናት ከነበሩት የጥንታዊው የአክሱም መንግሥት ነገሥታት ጋር ለማገናኘት የዚህ አዲስ ሥርወ መንግሥት መምጣት አንዳንድ ጊዜ “ተሐድሶ” እየተባለ ይጠራል።  " የአዲሱ ሥርወ መንግሥት የመጀመሪያዎቹ ዓመታት በተለይ ዕድለኛ አልነበሩም።  የኩኖ አምላከ ወደ ስልጣን መውጣት ብዙም አልተከበረም ነበር እና እሳቸውን ማለፍ ተከትሎ መንግስቱ ብዙ አወዛጋቢ መሪዎች ነበሩት።  የልጅ ልጃቸው አምዳ ጽዮን (1312-1342) በንግሥና ሲነግሡ ብቻ ነው ሥርወ መንግሥቱ በክርስቲያን መንግሥት እምብርት ውስጥ ያለውን የበላይነቱን በማጠናከር እና በአጎራባች ግዛቶች ላይ የበላይነቱን ማስፋት የቻለው።  በመሠረቱ፣ በዚህ ጊዜ የክርስቲያን መንግሥት በሕጋዊ መንገድ ኢምፓየር ተብሎ ሊጠራ የሚችልበት ደረጃ ላይ ደርሷል።

2 The " Solomonid " dynasty was founded by Yekuno Amlak and was so named because its rulers were purportedly descended from Solomon and the Queen of Sheba . In order to separate this new dynasty from the previous Zagwe dynasty , which was alleged to be illegitimate , and to link it to the illustrious monarchs of the ancient kingdom of Aksum , the emergence of this new dynasty is often sometimes referred to as a " restoration . " The new dynasty's early years were not particularly fortunate . Yekuno Amlak's ascension to power was not well regarded , and following his passing , the kingdom had a string of contentious successions . Only when his grandson Amda Tsiyon ( 1312-1342 ) succeeded him as king was his dynasty able to solidify its supremacy inside the Christian kingdom's heartlands and expand its dominance over adjacent territories . In fact , the Christian state at this time had expanded to the point that it might legitimately be called an empire .
