Vaginal discharge serves an important housekeeping function in the female reproductive system. Fluid made by glands inside the vagina and cervix carries away dead cells and bacteria. This keeps the vagina clean and helps prevent infection.

Most of the time, vaginal discharge is perfectly normal. The amount can vary, as can odor and color (which can range from clear to a milky white-ish), depending on the time in your menstrual cycle. For example, there will be more discharge when you're ovulating, breastfeeding, or sexually aroused. It may smell different during pregnancy or if one has been letting your personal hygiene slide.

None of those changes is cause for alarm. However, if the color, smell, or consistency seems quite different than usual, especially if there's also vaginal itching or burning, it can an infection or other condition.

Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare disorder in which one's body's immune system attacks their nerves. Weakness and tingling in their hands and feet are usually the first symptoms.

These sensations can quickly spread, eventually paralyzing their whole body. In its most severe form Guillain-Barre syndrome is a medical emergency. Most people with the condition must be hospitalized to receive treatment.

The exact cause of Guillain-Barre syndrome is unknown. But two-thirds of patients report symptoms of an infection in the six weeks preceding. These include a COVID-19, respiratory or a gastrointestinal infection or Zika virus.

There's no known cure for Guillain-Barre syndrome, but several treatments can ease symptoms and reduce the duration of the illness. Although most people recover completely from Guillain-Barre syndrome, some severe cases can be fatal.
