Fact: When people mentioned OSS, the quick and common assumption about it is that OSS only runs on the Linux operating system.

While open source and Linux are often seen together, open source applications are not exclusive to it. OSS projects are written for Windows and Macintosh operating systems as well, not just for Linux.

OSS works on platforms beyond these three as well which makes sense as OSS, at its core, is for everyone.

For more than a decade, Google has been baking and eating its own homemade Linux desktop distribution. The first version was Goobuntu. You can guess from the name, it was based on Ubuntu.

In 2018, Google moved its in-house Linux desktop from the Goobuntu to a new Linux distro, the Debian-based gLinux. Why? Because, as Google explained,
“Ubuntu's Long Term Support (LTS) two-year release "meant that we had to upgrade every machine in our fleet of over 100,000 devices before the end-of-life date of the OS."

The General answer: it is a time of “coopetition” than competitions to survive as a tech company, to build their foundations and produce a product on top of it.

The question often asked is, why wouldn’t they want to keep all of their software proprietary or only task their employees to work on their proprietary software?

The definite answer is that it is about organizations coming together to collectively solve common problems so they can separately innovate and differentiate on top of the common baseline.

They see that they are better off pooling resources to make the baseline better. Sometimes it is called “coopetition.”
